In MILIEU, every story captures the look and feel, the mood and character, the style of a place - its milieu. The milieu that defines a great house or garden, the unique character of a design professional, the message conveyed in a thoughtful essay about home life, the creative strategies for accomplishing the look you want for your home - these are the elements of our magazine.

MILIEU
FEATURED DESIGNERS
From The Desk Of… • Sourcing for clients and tickled pink with what I've found
On the Edge
CURATED
Spring Chores • When Kevin Brost and his partner, Ian Hamilton, finished the chore of renovating their 1940s weekend cottage in Door County, Wisconsin, they turned to their potting shed as the next project. After scouring shops around the state, they accumulated a collection of vintage and antique garden tools, objects that embody, as Brost says, “their honest beauty.”
THE New Guard • A generation of interior designers has risen, and they are setting a new high bar for excellence in the industry. The best interior designers working today create rooms and homes that will endure, for they not only appreciate and understand the past, but also know how to design for today and well into the future. Their practice is not about following trends or fashions or fads. Rather, it’s about being personal, innovative, creative, visionary. The editors of MILIEU think of this highly select group of designers as The New Guard—practitioners in the industry who are introducing timeless standards. They are creating lasting aesthetics through their own experiences. These are the designers whom you see out in the field—attending the antiques fairs, visiting showrooms and their workrooms, stopping into artisan studios, learning, and observing as they go. It’s no wonder that their work is already widely admired. All of these members of The New Guard, several of whom have been featured previously in MILIEU, have an established following, and we look forward to seeing more of their work over the many years they remain in practice. Let us welcome The New Guard.
