Leader and Cunningham have enlightened anime enthusiasts with their Ghiblioteque podcast, and here they focus on 30 notable Japanese anime feature films outside of Studio Ghibli productions. The reader will find famous titles such as Akira as well as several hidden gems like Yabushita's (aka Disney of the East) early, ground-breaking film Panda and the Magic Serpent and Satoshi Kon's hypnotic Millennium Actress. In their introduction, the authors are quick to say that their list is not definitive but does represent a variety of genres and stylistic approaches, from cartoonish children's films to erotic and painterly features. The films are arranged chronologically, from 1958 to 2021. Entries range from four to eight pages, with colorful illustrations on almost every page. Each entry traces the director's career and notable films and discusses the impact of the works. Most entries include a lengthy review of the movie, and several entries list further viewings. The writing is very engaging and laudatory; this is a cinephile's ode to Japanese anime feature films and can be appreciated by a wide audience.
