"Imagine Riverdale crossing streams with Stephen King's The Outsider and you'll get a sense of this gripping supernatural mystery...Gould's debut begins as a snappy paranormal yarn and unspools into a profound story about the complex interplay between grief, guilt, and identity." - Oprah Daily

Courtney Gould's thrilling YA debut The Dead and the Dark is about the things that lurk in dark corners, the parts of you that can't remain hidden, and about finding home in places—and people—you didn't expect.

The Dark has been waiting—and it won't stay hidden any longer.
Something is wrong in Snakebite, Oregon. Teenagers are disappearing, some turning up dead, the weather isn't normal, and all fingers point to TV's most popular ghost hunters who have just come to town.
Logan Ortiz-Woodley, daughter of TV's ParaSpectors, has never been to Snakebite before. But the moment she and her dads arrive, she starts to get the feeling that there's more than ghosts plaguing this small town. Ashley Barton's boyfriend was the first teen to go missing, and she's felt his ghost following her ever since. Although everyone shuns the Ortiz-Woodleys, the mysterious Logan may be the only person who can help Ashley get some answers.
When Ashley and Logan team up to figure out who—or what—is haunting Snakebite, their investigation reveals truths about the town, their families, and themselves that neither of them are ready for. As the danger intensifies, they realize that their growing feelings for each other could be a light in the darkness

L.A. transplant Logan Ortiz-Woodley, the 17-year-old daughter of two famous married TV paranormal investigators, the ParaSpectors, is grudgingly spending the summer after graduation in her adoptive fathers’ hometown of Snakebite, Ore. But something is wrong in insular Snakebite, from the inhospitable weather to the inhabitants’ simmering, almost tangible rage. When beloved high school athlete Tristan Granger vanishes a week after Logan’s family returns to investigate mysterious occurrences in the homophobic town, Logan’s emotionally distant father Brandon becomes the prime suspect. And as even more teens begin disappearing without a trace, it will take skeptical Logan, alongside Tristan’s guilt-stricken, psychic girlfriend Ashley, to uncover the truth of who or what is haunting Snakebite. Though the book’s pacing is hampered by unnecessary time jumps and the characters (largely defaulting to white) can feel shallow, Gould’s supernaturally spooky debut is filled with all manner of creepy inventiveness—a mixed bag that makes for an intriguing read. Ages 13–up. Agent: Claire Friedman and Jessica Mileo, InkWell Management.

Soneela Nankani narrates Courtney Gould's debut novel, a diverting mix of mystery, horror, ghost story, and queer romance with just the right blend of insouciance and seriousness. Logan's dads have dragged her from glitzy L.A. to isolated Snakebite, Oregon, as they probe paranormal happenings for their hit television show. Lonely in the unfriendly, homophobic town, Logan teams up with a local popular girl, Ashley, to investigate the disappearance of Ashley's boyfriend. The two girls cope impressively as they uncover lots of creepiness and also discover what they mean to each other. Nankani channels every teen character--whether perky nerd, cool dude, or shy girl--and imbues the adults with memorable characterizations to match their strong personalities, making this an absorbing and fun listen.
